Receipts by text
A customer at the counter can have their receipt sent to their phone instead of printed. This is how they are asked, what arrives, and what happens to the number afterwards - which is nothing.
Version 1.0, effective October 11, 2026. Replaces the version of October 8, 2026.
How a customer opts in
usellit is point-of-sale software used by retail stores. A customer opts in at the counter, one sale at a time, on the terminal’s screen.
After payment, the clerk asks the customer whether they would like their receipt sent by text. If the customer says yes, the clerk types the mobile number they give, and the customer’s agreement is recorded by ticking Customer agrees to receive this receipt by text. The box is never ticked in advance, and nothing can be sent until it is ticked. Beside it, the screen says:
You are opting in to receive a receipt for this purchase by text from usellit, sent for [store name]. One message per request. Msg and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help or STOP to opt out. Privacy policy
“Privacy policy” links to usellit.ai/privacy.
There is no form, no website sign-up and no list. A number is typed to send one receipt and is not carried over to the next sale.
Where that happens
This is the terminal screen where the number is entered and the customer agrees. It is the only place a number is asked for, and it is reached only after the sale is paid for:
What is sent
One message per purchase, containing the store’s name, the amount, the date and a link to the itemized receipt. For example:
usellit receipt from Cole's Hardware - $4.55 on Oct 4. Receipt: https://app.usellit.ai/r/U4NZ8EHU Reply STOP to opt out.
That is the whole of it. There is no follow-up, no second message and no campaign. A customer who buys twice in a day is texted twice, once for each receipt, because each was asked for separately.
What is never sent
No marketing. No promotions. No offers, surveys, loyalty reminders or “we miss you” messages. The number is given for a receipt and a receipt is the only thing it is used for. If usellit or a store ever wants to text anything else, that needs its own consent, asked for separately and plainly.
Opting out
Every message carries Reply STOP to opt out. Replying STOP stops all further messages immediately and permanently. Replying HELP returns the store’s name and contact details. Neither reply costs the customer anything beyond their carrier’s normal rate, and message and data rates may apply.
What happens to the number
The number is stored against that sale so the store can see the receipt was sent and whether it arrived, and for no other purpose. It is not added to any marketing list, not sold, not shared with anyone outside the store and its messaging provider, and not used to build a profile. No mobile information will be sold or shared with third parties or affiliates for promotional or marketing purposes. Deletion and access requests are handled as set out in the privacy policy.
Who the message comes from
Where a store has registered its own business messaging number, its receipts come from that number. Until it has, they are sent from a number belonging to usellit, Inc. and the message names the store, so the customer can see who rang the sale.
